A Dermatologist Says the Key to Preventing Hyperpigmentation Is Already in Your Beauty Routine
Dealing with hyperpigmentation can be a frustrating challenge for many as dark spots on the skin seem inevitable. While there are various products like chemical peels, serums, cleansers, and moisturizers that claim to help with hyperpigmentation, one of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent dark spots is by using sunscreen regularly.
Hyperpigmentation is caused by the overproduction of melanin in the skin and can be triggered by factors such as inflammation from conditions like acne and eczema, use of harsh skincare products, genetics, exposure to sunlight, and certain medications, according to Dr. Jenny Liu, a board-certified dermatologist in Minnesota. While prescription treatments are commonly used to address hyperpigmentation, wearing sunscreen consistently, even indoors, can play a significant role in preventing and minimizing further discoloration.
Dr. Liu explains, “UV radiation stimulates melanocytes to produce more melanin. Research shows that sunscreen alone can help prevent the worsening of hyperpigmentation without the need for additional lightening agents.” Applying sunscreen can help in preventing UV rays from triggering more melanin production in existing dark spots and also ward off the appearance of new spots by regulating melanin production.
To achieve results, it’s crucial to make sunscreen a daily habit. Dr. Liu suggests using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, applying about a teaspoon (or two fingers’ worth) for the face and neck, and reapplying every two hours when necessary. For individuals with darker skin tones, she recommends using tinted sunscreen to block visible light from the sun.
Aside from sunscreen, Dr. Liu emphasizes the importance of using gentle skincare products to minimize skin irritation. Rather than experimenting with various products at home, which could potentially worsen hyperpigmentation, she advises consulting a board-certified dermatologist for personalized recommendations.
