A Simple Morning Stretch Routine to Help Strengthen Your Muscles

Your alarm has gone off, but are you fully awake yet? We all have our morning routines to help us start the day right, usually involving a hefty dose of caffeine. However, incorporating some gentle movements can also do wonders for waking up your body and mind.

“In the morning, our bodies often feel tight and tense from sleeping in one position for hours,” shared Jeff Brannigan, the program director at Stretch*d, a stretching-focused recovery studio in New York City. “Starting the day with a few active stretches can help loosen muscles, reduce tension, and boost circulation.”

This 15-minute morning stretch routine guided by Brian Spencer, an instructor at East River Pilates, focuses on breathing deeply and moving with intention. Spencer emphasizes the importance of deep breaths to oxygenate the muscles and brain while moving through positions like cat-cow, chest openers, spine twists, and shoulder mobility exercises.

Incorporating movements like rotating your arms in circular motions, reminiscent of a freestyle stroke, can infuse energy into your morning routine. Spencer encourages visualizing refreshing activities like ocean swims and playful encounters with dolphins to add a sense of lightness and vitality.

Moreover, Spencer advocates for a gentle approach to stretching in the morning, urging individuals not to push too hard too soon. Rather than diving deep into stretches, he suggests gradually exploring movements to allow muscles to gradually wake up. “It’s like hitting the snooze button for your muscles,” he explains.

By taking the time to indulge in these initial stretches and listening to your body’s cues, you can set a positive tone for the day ahead and ensure that your muscles are primed and ready for action.
