Google Maps Revamps Interface to Include Air Quality Data Alongside Other Features

Our lungs and heart rely on clean air to power our bodies during physical activity. When we exercise, we breathe in significantly more oxygen than when at rest, making it crucial to ensure the air we breathe is free from pollutants. Dr. Russell Buhr, a pulmonologist at UCLA Health, emphasizes the impact of pollution on our respiratory system, especially for individuals with conditions like asthma.

With the rise in air pollution levels, Dr. Buhr advises checking the air quality before outdoor workouts, particularly on days with heightened pollution due to factors like wildfires or heat. Google has responded to user input by introducing a new air quality feature in its app, allowing users to easily access the Air Quality Index (AQI) without external searches.

Hema Budaraju, a senior director at Google, notes that user feedback propelled the addition of this feature. Users can now assess weather conditions and air quality before planning outdoor activities directly on Google Maps, aiding in decision-making processes. Additionally, a wildfire layer has been incorporated into the app to alert users of wildfire locations, serving as a red flag to avoid outdoor exercises in affected areas.

To view these new features, users need to update Google Maps to the latest version, click on the layers button, and select the desired layer. The air quality is rated in simple categories such as “good,” “moderate,” and “poor,” streamlining the information for easy understanding.

Dr. Buhr underscores the significance of checking air quality levels, stressing that appearances can be deceptive, as even clear skies may not guarantee good air quality. It is recommended to check the AQI of the intended workout location as a preventive measure, irrespective of existing lung conditions. Considering that a large portion of the global population resides in areas with poor air quality, maintaining awareness of air pollution levels is crucial for overall health and well-being.
